SDK Book Launch Set

Anvil Publishing, Inc. in cooperation with the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) and School for Labor and Industrial Relations (SOLAIR) will launch SDK, Militant but Groovy: Stories of Samahang Demokratiko ng Kabataan, compiled and edited by Soliman M. Santos Jr. and Paz Verdades M. Santos, at the University of the Philippines Diliman this March. The launch is part of the activities celebrating the UP Centennial year.

The book is a collection of personal accounts by a spectrum of ex-DKs from different SDK generations and political persuasions. The book is not a definite history of SDK, but its narrative will “help secure the place of the [group] in [Philippine] history”. The group, through its members Vivencio Jose, Sixto Carlos, Jr., Ninotchka Rosca, Luis Teodoro, Jr., Behn Cervantes and Gary Olivar, played a prominent role in Philippine student activism, particularly during Martial Law and the First Quarter Storm. The SDK, the book notes, “was considered to be successful in winning over writers, intellectuals and elements from the wealthier classes… This greater acceptability to the bourgeoisie led to the joke that SDK meant ‘Samahang Double Knit’... All told, the SDK had an image of being more cerebral and having a better grasp of memory.”

In essence, SDK, Militant but Groovy is a compelling narrative of a generation and the turbulent times they confronted. In his now classic essay “The Tide of History," SDK stalwart Vivencio Jose describes what he calls a narrative of liberation thus, “It was patently clear that the unchanging official historical narrative was no longer feasible, they had to create their own narrative. With high hopes thatpraxis would disclose its discourse, they embarked on a journey of discovery and struggle. They did not look back even when the violent pull and push of reality tore the last shred of their innocence. The journey changed their lives forever. They thus created their part of the narrative of human liberation.”

Read Asia: Cultures and Cuisines of our Neighbors

In a recent gathering of economic and cultural ministers from the ASEAN region, it was acknowledged that it is important to realize our affinity with nearby cultures and set up a network that will permit us to trade histories, our arts and knowledge with one another and gain strength from each other. Cultural workers and business leaders have long recognized the need to familiarize ourselves and become familiar with our neighbors. As we deepen our appreciation of one another, we can  together struggle for recognition on a global scale.

In pursuit of  this vision, National Book Store and Anvil Publishing, Inc. proudly launch READ ASIA this March in 29  NBS branches all over Metro Manila. The campaign aims to popularize fiction and non-fiction books by Asian authors to the general readership thereby paving the way for acceptance of literatures from and about our ASEAN neighbors.

The campaign is spearheaded by National Book Store and Anvil Publishing, and supported by  its partners The Maya Kitchen, Claude 9, Philippine Graphic, Kikkoman and Café Ysabel. For a minimum purchase of  P300, buyers of any of the featured books in the campaign will get a chance to win exciting prizes, such as gift certificates, cooking lessons, and products from participating partners. The promo will run from March 26 to April 30, 2008.
